Jesus and coffee. That could be my slogan for what my 5 a.m. Wake up looks like. I used to hit snooze many times, eventually waking up with just enough time to add a curl to my hair and swipe some mascara on but now I have chosen to wake early to start my day. Waking an hour earlier allows me time to read my bible, pray, and just spend some time with the Lord. It's been such a help. What comes with the new wake up routine is an afternoon nap....yeah right. What I did realize was waking up an hour earlier left me struggling around 2 p.m. My normal cup of coffee with flavored creamer just wasn't doing the trick anymore...enter bulletproof coffee!
People look at me in disbelief when they see me fix my coffee now or hear what I put in it. Bulletproof Coffee (BPC) is an idea from a wild diet or low carb high fat way of eating. The term is used interchangeably but there are many recipes and ways of creating BPC on the internet. My main reason for trying it was because I realized the creamer I was dumping in my coffee (the whiter my coffee was the more I loved it) just wasn't going to work anymore. My beloved pumpkin spice creamer, had ingredients that were no longer desired. I needed to find a solution.
The idea behind bulletproof coffee is that it increases your fats and keeps you satiated for a longer time. BPC is my breakfast. I eat nothing with it and it usually holds me until lunch. The fats combined with the MCT oil promotes fat burning, improved mental alertness and clarity and energy.
Here is my recipe!
1 cup organic/free trade coffee (French roast is my favorite because the stronger the better in my opinion)
1 tbsp heavy whipping cream
1 tbsp Kerry gold grass fed butter
1 tbsp MCT oil (these are found naturally in coconut oil which can be substituted but I prefer the pure form of MCT's for the health benefits) I will also add that you should build up to 1 or 2 tbsp because it can upset your stomach to begin with. Start with half or even less if needed and build up.
Blend together in a blender until frothy. Blending is key unless you like an oil slick floating atop your coffee.
I also like to add a sprinkle of cinnamon or a few drops of liquid stevia if you want sweetness. So yummy and filling!
