My memories of Vacation Bible School as a child include so many different visions, sights, and experiences. Sanctuaries being transformed into intricately designed "sets", maybe a rainforest, perhaps a desert. Games of dodge ball, red rover, or tag were always in the mix and snacks took on a world of their own, often mimicking some kind of symbol according to the theme for the week. Friends from school always showed up looking three shades darker than when I last seen them at school, and sun kissed noses greeted teachers after a long day of summer swimming. The most significant memory however wasn't the games, the food, or the fun, but the great stories that I learned from the bible and the teachers that helped me to learn those stories. Those stories and lessons have always stuck with me over the years and were influential to my relationship with Christ.
It's been quite awhile since I experienced bible school, so I found myself excited to take Camdyn this week to bible school for the very first time. I couldn't wait for her to begin to learn some of those great stories of the bible, fellowship with children her age, and experience God! She has enjoyed it and I have enjoyed hearing what she has learned each night. While seeing her learn has been a blessing, I found myself pretty blessed tonight as well.
Tonight, our VBS "Captain America" as the preacher calls him and his side kick "Twinkles" narrated the story for tonight: David and Goliath. I've heard this story so many times, but tonight it resonated with me. A lesson meant for children, spoke to me as an adult and it stirred my heart.
Like David faced his giant, Goliath, we too face giants each day. It may not be an over sized man with a sword and a shield, but it could be finances, sickness, stresses of day to day life, jobs, etc. We all have a "giant" of some sort. Some of the giants in my life have seemed impossible to defeat lately. Some days it feels like the giant has me under his foot, holding me hostage beneath it's weight. We all know the saying faith and prayer can move mountains....well....it can also move giants. It can leave them a crumbled heap of rubble. With God, any giant can be defeated, but we must pray and have faith that he will help us win the battle. Who needs an army on your side when you have the ultimate warrior on your side? Facing the giants of life, can be a lot less scarier than trying to do it alone.
Instead of dropping off your babies at VBS this summer, hang around for awhile. You might just receive a blessing!
