If you don't recognize this classic piece of children's literature you are either a) not an elementary school teacher who is born for read aloud time b) were born long after it's publication or c) your picture book days have vanished from memory. Today, as my day progressed, I kept seeing this title flash through my mind; like a scrolling, neon, marquee sign. Alexander and I could have really sympathized with each other today.
I woke up this morning feeling refreshed and excited (I also felt a foot in my back and had a tiny little arm and hand laid across my neck). Today I was going to FINALLY sell my car that we have tried to sell since December. I dropped Camdyn off at daycare and proceeded to do the last minute things that needed doing before the big sale! Cleaning and detailing among other little fixes. I arrange for someone to follow me to Winston Salem, where I will meet the buyer, drive 40 minutes to meet him, and then the said buyer backs out. Instead of my celebratory caramel latte from Starbucks I promised myself on the way home, I resorted to a ride of defeat back home with a side of headache.
Arrive home from a failed sale, sit down to rest (just for a few minutes)....BAM! Camdyn's wailing tells me something has happened. Yes, as she pulls out a toy from her toy box it catches her nose and leaves quite the mark. Definitely be a nice looking bruise in the morning I'm sure. Let's also not forget Mom of the Year who also pinches Camdyn's leg in the car seat buckle trying to strap her in to go to our first t-ball practice. Cue another wailing episode.
Arrive home from t-ball practice (where Camdyn at first acts like we have released her into a cage of wild animals, crying, not wanting to play....good news however, she finally let go of her insecurities and did wonderful...proud Mommy moment!) I was so thankful once we arrived home because being the domestic goddess that I am (those of you who know me will realize what a contradiction to my true persona that really is!) I had decided to fix my baked spaghetti before ball practice so that the spaghetti would be ready once we got home. I invited my father-in-law to stay and eat with us. "We will have plenty!" I tell him....As I spoon Camdyn's onto her plate, I knew I messed up. My good intentions of using lean, good for you, healthy and delicious, ground turkey in my baked spaghetti instead of the fattening yet commonly traditional used pound of hamburger, has not quite worked out. I look at William and say, "This is not going to be good. I shouldn't have done this." About that time, it happens. Camdyn speaks up with an odd look on her face, "Mommy, this spaghetti doesn't taste good. It is not right." Coming from Camdyn the Connoisseur of Spaghetti, there was no way it was edible. How awful to invite your father in law to dinner, then apologize as your husband dumps out the entire dish of spaghetti. Make a note now: ground turkey is okay in some things and even a turkey burger isn't so bad but DO NOT put it in your spaghetti. YUCK! So....yeah...we just finished eating our value meals from McDonald's and Camdyn just completed her gourmet meal of a peanut butter sandwich and cheese doodles. :( Epic Fail :(
I finally put Camdyn in the bath and start humming, as I usually do. We tend to sing many different songs during bath time, and tonight was no different. It was only after several minutes of humming that I realized what song I was humming however and then the tears began to fall....

I’VE GOT SO MUCH TO THANK HIM FOR
SO MUCH TO PRAISE HIM FOR
WELL YOU SEE NOW HE HAS BEEN SO GOOD TO ME
AND WHEN I THINK OF WHAT HE’S DONE
AND WHERE HE'S BROUGHT ME FROM
I’VE GOT SO MUCH TO THANK HIM FOR
Coincidence? No. After the day I had and the feelings I was having, this song was not placed in my head at the end of the "terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day" without a reason. The Lord needed to remind me, that even though my car didn't sell today, I have a car to drive! Camdyn bumped her head on a toy box because she has toys that some kids dream of having! My supper was awful but I had money to go buy something else to eat. There are others in the world who would be glad to have the problems or pitfalls that I do. They would trade theirs in for mine on any given day.
The reason for this post? 1. I hope it made you laugh. Maybe my mishaps will be humor for someone else. Everyone needs a smile :) 2. Remember through the stress of a bad day, just how blessed you are! We all have so much to thank him for...even on our worst days!
